Description
Cult Staten Island filmmaker Andy Milligan directed this exploitation film, one of his rare non-horror efforts. The fleshpot in question is Dusty Cole (Diana Lewis), who runs out on her surly lover and takes to prostitution, moving in with an aging drag queen (Lynn Flanagan) who hustles as well. Dusty sleeps with a rough customer named Jimmie (Paul Matthews), who beats her with a belt and then sets up a group-date at a poker party. In the meantime, Dusty meets Bob (Bob Walters), who lives on Staten Island and promises her a way out of the hustling life. As one last favor to Flanagan, Dusty attends the poker party and is once again viciously beaten by Jimmie. After Flanagan betrays her as well, Dusty gives up prostitution and goes to Bob’s house for a night of romantic (and extremely slow-moving) lovemaking. The next day, she is walking Bob to the ferry when he is run over by a car and killed. That night, Dusty is back on the streets in a downbeat ending. Flanagan is perversely entertaining as the bitchy, racist drag-queen, though one could also see her as yet another unnecessarily self-loathing gay stereotype. Still, this is not art. For what it is (sleazy trash), Fleshpot on 42nd Street is amusing enough, and is a must-see for Milligan’s fans. An obligatory in-joke has a character suggest going to a double-feature horror show of Milligan’s Torture Dungeon and Bloodthirsty Butchers.
